Design Trend: Animal Instincts

Elephants and alligators make their way indoors.

BY April 11, 2014

Move over leopard and zebra prints: Animals are making the leap from fabric to faucets, furniture and more.

Whether small like Theodore Alexander’s cast-brass Dangerous Currents alligator magnifying glass or a herd of gold-finished elephants under a dining room table for 14, doses of the animal kingdom show your wild side – without going full safari theme.

The gator magnifier – and other stylized accessories – add spice to a desk- or tabletop, says Kersten Moe of Traditions in Naples. Plus, it’s functional as is THG’s beautifully etched Cygne delicately etched swan-in-flight tub filler (thgusa.com).

UK luxe brand Splinter Works initially created the Elepharaonic table and chairs as a commissioned piece, the elongated legs of the parading pack of pachyderms under the glass-top inspired by the client’s Dali painting. Cast in bronze, then finished in liquid gold, the herd carries colored handmade glass spheres. Crystal dewdrops sparkle from patinaed leafs. The accompanying chairs feature subtle elephant head armrests and velvet cushions (splinterworks.co.uk).
