2015 Visitors' Annual guide: Visual Arts

Southwest Florida is more than covered when it comes to art both fine and funky.

BY January 5, 2015

Art collectors come from around the globe to acquire fine paintings, sculpture, photography and objets d’art here on the Gulfshore. Scores of galleries and ateliers reflect our love of all things beautiful. Oil, watercolor, glass, bronze or clay … exquisite miniatures to massive one-of-a-kind installations … art treasures come in all sizes and all media.

Besides the major galleries in The Baker Museum and The von Liebig Art Center (Naples), the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center (Fort Myers), and the gallery rows of Old Naples and downtown Fort Myers, discover the small galleries of famous and not-yet-discovered artists who call the Gulfshore home. Visit renowned photographer Clyde Butcher’s gallery at the edge of the Everglades. See Betty Newman’s whimsical oils and acrylics at the Esplanade Marco Island. Meet Nora Butler, who pencils jewel-toned mermaids and sea creatures at Crayton Cove (Naples), and don’t miss the colorful galleries in the quirky village of Matlacha on Pine Island.

On the first Friday of each month, Fort Myers’ Historic River District celebrates the arts with gallery open houses and live music. Old Naples has its Third Thursdays on Third and its Evenings on Fifth, and there’s always an art show or exhibit somewhere.
