Hot Dish: Chefs’ Secrets—Top Spots for Baked Goods

BY January 7, 2015

In the January 2015 issue—on newsstands now—we gave you the scoop on where chefs shop in Naples and Fort Myers for everything from authentic Mexican chorizo and Indian spices to the freshest Gulf shrimp and kangaroo meat (we were surprised, too). But what about baked goods? For when you want a sweet indulgence with little fuss, we asked local pros and compiled a short list of recommended go-to spots that will make you throw any healthy eating resolutions to the wind (at least for a decadent bite or two).

DeRomo’s Gourmet Market

(26811 South Bay Drive, Bonita Springs; deromos.com)

At least four full deli cases are packed with Italian cookies, lobster tails, cannoli (in petite and full sizes) baked fresh each day at this new specialty market in the Promenade Shopping Center. A full coffee bar, plus indoor-outdoor seating, makes it a great place to kick off a leisurely afternoon exploring the newly revived shaded courtyard of stores.

Mikkelsen's Pastry Shop

(1068 Business Lane, Naples; mikkelsenspastryshop.com)

If you need a three-tiered cake or specialty dessert, they can make anything you need. But while you are there, grab a Gâteau St. Honoré for yourself. Trust us.

Norman Love Confections Chocolate Salon

(11380 Lindbergh Blvd., Fort Myers; normanloveconfections.com)

Known throughout Southwest Florida—and the nation—for beautiful, dainty artisan chocolates, it is also a delicious pick for croissants (yes, chocolate, but plain and almond as well), muffins, Danish pastries, cookies, blondies, brownies, specialty cakes and more.

Oakes Farms

(2205 Davis Blvd., Naples; oakesfarms.com)

Many local foodies frequent this family-run market for a great selection of fresh baked breads, Italian cookies and cakes—plus everything else to go along with them.

Sweet Odin's Danish Bakery

(24830 S. Tamiami Trail, Bonita Springs; sweetodins.com)

Any one can bring a chocolate cake to a dinner party. Up your game with a kringle from this authentic Danish bakery.

Tony's Off Third

(1300 Third St. S., Naples; tonysoffthird.com)

From their carrot cake, made with the same recipe for the past 40 years, to the magnificent Key lime pie, Tony's is one of the best spots for confections. (Try a snowball. You won't regret it.) Plus, it's a great spot for coffee and scones and to pick up the perfect bottle of wine for the evening.
