The Softer Side of Modern
Freestyle’s Faith Fix describes the kitchen design of the Bardot model home in Quail West as “modern with a soft touch.” Created by designer Ruta Menaghlazi, the room features honey-toned stained walnut cabinetry accented with cream painted interiors on upper open cabinets; walnut flooring; and a quartz island countertop with waterfall edges. Man-made quartz by Pompeii, Fix says, “is as durable as granite, costs about the same but offers more contemporary and cleaner options.” A backsplash of brushed aluminum and glass adds some light-reflecting dazzle.

Today’s kitchens are trending to white on white, which turns out is anything but ho-hum. Case in point: Kira Krümm’s bright, white and welcoming design for a client’s modern beach home in Bonita. The designer pairs sleek white cabinetry with mystery-white marble slabs on the island breakfast bar and countertops and a couture Statuario and paper-white marble chevron backsplash. Accessories and accents in aqua blue, the client’s favorite color, add watercolor-like strokes to the white canvas; the patterned wallpaper in the pantry takes it to the extreme. Weathered wood flooring warms the large space, as do sandblasted wood and iron barstools and the living edge of the walnut dining table.
