Hate the sound of a dentist’s drill? Good news: If this study is any indication, fillings may become less necessary.

The researchers followed two groups of people: those who got fillings to treat tooth decay and those who took on a less-invasive treatment of fluoride varnishes, sealants and changes to their oral hygiene. Turns out those in the second group actually fared better in the long term.

And, as Time points out, the study may also mean you can save a significant amount of money.
