Get Ready to Live Longer

More people are becoming centenarians.

BY January 26, 2016

Start saving up those birthday candles. The odds are getting better that you might make it to the century mark.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the number of centenarians in the United States has increased 44 percent since 2000. There are now more than 72,000 in the 100-plus club, which is also more than triple what it was in 1980. The reasons are several: better medical care, more attention to diet and fitness. Experts expect this trend to continue as the baby boomers start to age.

“We are moving into a very different country this century,” William Frey of Brookings Institution told The New York Times. “It’s the very tip of the iceberg.”
