Hazardous to Your Health: Holding Back a Sneeze

Just let it out.

BY January 16, 2018

In a rather unusual case, a British man literally blew a small hole in his throat when he held in a sneeze. After a stint in the hospital, he was released healthy and is presumably living a more sneeze-friendly life.

Sneeze-related injuries are rare, but can result in minor injuries, such as ruptured eardrums or sinus problems. After all, a sneeze exits the body at more than 100 miles per hour. If that force isn’t going out, it’s staying inside the body, potentially causing issues. Like your mother told you, the best thing to do is sneeze into a napkin or the crook of your arm.
