On March 15, 2018, Mario Diaz-Balart stood before his colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives to recognize beloved City Clerk Dottie Joiner for “selflessly serving the citizens of Everglades City, especially in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, giving support that transcends her official responsibilities.” The congressman presented Joiner with a framed copy of her page in the Congressional Record, but more often than not it can be tracked to the proud mayor’s desk as he brags to visitors about his colleague.

“Dottie gets between people and their problems,” he says. “She’s unquestionably the glue that holds this city together.”
