What to Do (and Not to Do) First Thing in the Morning

How to adjust your morning routine to make your day better.

Those first waking moments, even before you have a (hopefully) nutrient-rich breakfast, can determine what kind of day you’re going to have. So make them fulfilling. First off, do some simple stretching (touch your toes or stretch your hamstrings) for 5 minutes to get the blood flowing. Then, get a glass of water to replenish the fluids lost during the night. Whatever you do, don’t check the news. People who looked at just 3 minutes of negative news in the morning were about 30 percent more likely to have a bad day compared with people who held off on reading, according to a University of Pennsylvania study.
