Fitness experts answer your questions

BY March 27, 2019

I am a 57-year-old woman. I had a massive stroke at 49. I’m not as mobile as I used to be. What exercises can I do for my tummy?
—Alison O., Naples

D. Zac Lavoie of Pro Senior Fitness says: First, I always remind everyone that having a flat or even a developed mid-section requires a reasonably healthy body fat percentage. In order to achieve this a combination of a healthy diet, weight training and cardiovascular exercise is the recommended combination. To train and develop the abdominals specifically, it’s important to work all of the main muscles of your abdominals. Exercise ball crunches, seated knee raises and medicine ball oblique twists incorporate those muscles and should be safe for someone in your age group. Combining great abdominal exercises such as those ones with healthy eating habits and cardiovascular exercise makes up a recipe for a flat, well-developed tummy!
