House Call: Easing into Yoga

Health and fitness experts answer your questions

BY July 5, 2019

“I’m interested in starting to go to yoga regularly. I’ve tried it before, and, honestly, it was more of a workout than what I thought. What do you recommend?” — Sally D., Naples

Lauren Fox, of Donation Yoga Naples, says: When finding a yoga class that fits your mental and physical needs, make sure the instructor gives two or three modifications, involves the breath with every pose, and gives adjustments on both sides to help you learn the proper technique (which ultimately prevents injury). Great yoga instructors do not make their students feel inferior to them and recognize that they are there simply to be a guide and to serve their students, who are all at different levels. Please give yoga another try elsewhere. It will provide you with not only physical exercise but also mindfulness and mental health.
