The Life Aquatic

Katy Danca Galli’s third time using a professional underwater camera system was on assignment for Scuba Diving magazine in Little Cayman in 2012. “I had beautiful equipment, but I had to research how to use everything,” says the Fort Myers-
based photog.

The biggest challenge is the lighting. It can take two to three hours to set up the equipment and ensure the underwater strobes don’t illuminate any of the floating particles in the water.

“Not only do you have to dive safely, you have to maintain your equipment and try to capture good images along the way,” she says.

In 2017, Galli became the first female resident artist for the Lee County Tourism Board. In that role, she uses her work to showcase the beauty of the Gulf. When the red tide outbreak hit last year, Galli rounded up a group of five local photographers to create a benefit show titled “Visions of Clean Water,” at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center. She wanted people to remember the Gulf as she knew it: a jade-colored wonderland brimming with wildlife—the stark opposite of the shots flashing on the news.

“I hoped if nothing else, this photography would let people see the images of the true Southwest Florida, what it looks like when we’re not in a devastating water crisis,” she says.

Throwback Tunes

As singer and guitarist for The Hollies, Liverpool-born Terry Sylvester
performed at the legendary Cavern Club alongside another famous quartet: The Beatles. Sylvester went solo in the eighties and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.

Expect to hear top hits from The Hollies—like “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” and “The Air That I Breathe”—when he plays at the Center for Performing Arts Bonita Springs on September 21.
