Feel Good

Expect to Gain Weight This Holiday Season

Good news: It may not be as much as you expect.

BY December 6, 2016

It’s hard to run the gamut of holiday meals and not pack on a few pounds. But don’t fret too much. You might be exaggerating how big of deal it actually is.

A study from the National Institutes of Health showed that the average American only gained about 1 pound from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day.  Meanwhile, Americans claimed they put on about 5 pounds during the holidays. (To be fair, the study showed that overweight individuals did tend to gain more on average.) But, the weight gain Americans did experience constituted about half of the pounds they put on during the year.

Another issue: The weight people put on during the holidays tended to stay on—despite all those well-intentioned New Year’s resolutions.
