Changes Afoot at La Colmar

On the docket for October: a new chef (from the town of Colmar, France, bien sur), new hours and an irresistible promo for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

If you follow local food news, you can applaud that the original chef at La Colmar is now happily cooking up take-out treats at Yana Eats, following an unexpected split with the owners of this French bakery.

Now the bakery has big news of its own: It has a new chef at the helm, Patrick Bernet, who is also amazingly from the same little Alsatian town that it is named after. Bernet, a pastry chef who has owned three French bakeries and cafés in the Minneapolis area over the past two decades (he is flying back every other week to check on them), and his team are still whipping up bread, croissants, confections and more, and they’ve got surprises in store for season. Starting on Oct. 19, the restaurant will be open for its regular counter service from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and then from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m., there will be full-on dinner service. The menu will be limited in scope but anchored by the bistro classics most of us crave—steak frites, duck à l’orange, beef bourguignon and an herb-crusted rack of lamb.

Also, starting NOW for the whole month of October, 100 percent of any purchase of pink macarons ($3 each) will be donated to the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer SWFL.

How sweet is that?
