Entrenched in Spring

Here in Southwest Florida, the joys of spring also include April showers. And as I mentioned in a previous blog, when it rains here, it really rains! Overcast skies and rainy days need cheering up with a blast of color—why add to the gray with dark-colored outerwear? A classic choice is the trench coat or jacket. This time around there are some great color options including cobalt blue (one of this season’s favorite trends) and citrus bright Tangerine Tango, Pantone’s Color of the Year! A lightweight spring jacket is a useful addition to any wardrobe, whether to protect against the elements or simply as a stylish option when another layer is required. If you prefer a jacket that’s less coat-like, go for one that does double duty and can be worn indoors—handy in...

Some Uplifting Thoughts About Bras

When it comes to vital statistics, here’s one that’s truly astounding: 95 percent of women are wearing the wrong size bras! There are a number of reasons for this: weight loss or gain; hormonal changes, for example; but the main one is that we tend to forget how long we’ve had them! Guidelines on how often to replace a bra vary from every three to six months, but it’s more relevant to think in terms of the number of times a bra is worn and washed: 100 wearings/100 washings, and it’s time to replace it. I recommend having a bra fitting at least once, preferably twice, a year. This is important not just for comfort, but from a style perspective: If a bra doesn’t fit correctly, then nothing that goes on top of it is going to look right, either. A well-fitting bra is...

A Soap Opera

Showing our style doesn’t just stop at our clothing and personal appearance. It naturally extends to just about every other area of our lives, including the items and products we use every day. For example, I have a penchant for gorgeous soap. Opening the wrapper on a brand new bar is like opening a gift—there is the sensory experience as the fragrance is released and the tactile experience of the soap in my hand. And I’m not alone in enjoying this little luxury (a rudimentary search online brings up more surveys on soap preferences than I ever imagined), but it’s really not surprising—this everyday item is the most personal of products, so it makes sense that something that touches every inch of our skin needs to be chosen with care. I recently visited the Naples...

Hot Spring Bags

Pink top handle and beige quilted bags from J.McLaughlin (Venetian Village, Naples) In spring and summer, bags as well as clothing take on a lighter, fresher look, and this season there are some key trends to keep an eye on. Pushing the Envelope: Downsize your purse and upgrade your style with an envelope bag. With either a fold-over top or front flap, these flatter styles are a great choice if you like the security of a bag that fastens. If you can’t give up your over-packed purse, try a slightly bigger, structured top-handle satchel style. On-trend neutral colors such as tan, gray and beige are easy to incorporate with between season clothing (especially if you’re preparing to head north soon). Tan satchel from Michael Kors (Waterside Shops, and Dillards), Rebecca...
