Internationally recognized performer and “King of Gipsy Rumba” Luis Mejia, creator of Olé-Olé Rumba flamenco show, brings the culture and dance traditions of Spain to Naples as a complement to the internationally acclaimed Mediterranean cuisine of Vergina Restaurant at 700 5th Avenue South. Flamenco Night will be held on Sunday, November 17 offering two dinner shows at 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm. Show tickets cost $50 each including a three-course dinner. Reservations are recommended by calling (239) 659-7008. “Flamenco is a complex art form incorporating poetry, singing (cante), guitar playing (toque), dance (baile), polyrhythmic hand-clapping (palmas), and finger snapping (pitos),” explains Vergina restaurant general manager Augusto Marenco. “While nobody really knows where the term “flamenco” originated, everyone agrees that the art form began in southern Spain—Andalusia and Murcia—but was also shaped by musicians and performers in the Caribbean, Latin America, and Europe,” he adds. The flamenco consists of rhythmic dance steps performed on a hard wood floor, originated with the Spanish Gypsies and has evolved through the years to the more structured form familiar today. The classical Spanish dances consist of ballet moves in colorful Spanish costumes accompanied by the distinctive sound of castanets. According to Marenco, Luis Mejia has taken the concept of “Rumba Flamenca” to a whole different level combining Flamenco, Pop, Classical, Spanish, Arabic and contemporary rhythms with passion, elegance, and grace of mesmerizing dance. “Luis’s music is a unique combination of Flamenco Gipsy Rumba style similar to Gipsy Kings with a modern twist, making it extremely appealing to general audiences,” Marenco adds. “With passionate, delicate acoustic guitars and husky vocals, Gipsy Rumba Flamenco music is some of the most seductive music in the world. Watching the flamenco guitarists and dancers in action is proof enough, but one can also enjoy simply listening to the captivating sound of the Flamenco guitar,” he adds.
