YMCA’s Splash Week starts March 11

Event Date/Time

Mar 11, 2013 to Mar 15, 2013

Description

Registration is underway for Splash Week, a free water safety program for any preschool or school-aged child ages 3-12 in the community. The YMCA’s Splash Week program will be held at the Greater Naples YMCA the week of spring break in Collier County, March 11-15, and consists of five 30-minute sessions.

Targeted at both children and parents, the sessions teach water safety skills along with YMCA core character values - caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.  Sessions are offered throughout the day to accommodate parents’ schedules: morning, afternoon, and evening sessions are available.

“Enrolling your child in certified water safety lessons such as those offered during the YMCA's Splash Week, plays an integral role in reducing a child's drowning risk,” explains Dr. Todd Vedder, chair of the Safe & Healthy Children's Coalition of Collier County. “Water safety lessons not only teach a life saving skill but introduce children to healthy activity. Physical barriers impeding access to potential water hazards, up to date knowledge of CPR along with water safety lessons engaging both parent and child form the core of effective drown breaking measures.”

The goal of Splash Week is to teach children basic skills so they can be safe around water and at the same time provide public education to parents. The Y hopes to have over 500 children participate in its 2013 program. Advance registration is required and space is limited. Registration will end on Monday, March 4.  Interested parents are encouraged to register today, either online at www.ymcapalms.org or in person at the Greater Naples YMCA, 5450 YMCA Road.
