Description:

Practicing family medicine at Lee Physician Group checks all the dream career boxes for Dr. Tanya E. Anim: healthcare, education, and advocacy for women and underserved populations. In her multifaceted role overseeing women’s health and OB-GYN within Lee Health’s Family Medicine Residency Program (a dual partnership between Lee Health and Florida State University), Anim sees patients in family medicine and obstetrics/gynecology, and trains and supervises residents. The Miami native shifted her focus from teaching to medicine as an undergraduate at FSU. While on campus, she volunteered with a peer sexual-health education group, got involved with the multicultural association of pre-health students and formed a minority women’s health-education group. “I have always [wanted] to care for patients in a well-rounded way,” she says. FSU was a natural choice for her medical school. “They are very dedicated to creating doctors that serve underserved populations,” she says. Anim also joined the National Health Service Corps, a nonprofit that connects doctors to communities with limited access to healthcare. She’s done a fellowship in OB-GYN and women’s health at Florida Hospital in Orlando and became an assistant professor at the University of Florida (where she won the Florida Academy of Family Physicians Young Leader Award). As a mother of two young children, Anim loves caring comprehensively for families. “I may have a patient who becomes pregnant and I care for her throughout her pregnancy, deliver her baby and then get to take care of the baby, as well. And, maybe her husband is my patient, too. I can see all of them, plus think about their mental health needs and whatever social issues may come up in their lives,” she says. On any given day, Anim may be performing a C-section, providing hospice care, or doing rounds with her residents, treating anything from hypertension to the common cold. She juggles caring for others’ families with caring for her own. Anim and her husband play video games together almost every night, and the entire clan bonds over their love of Disney. Professionally, Anim looks forward to continuing her advocacy for people who have historically been disenfranchised in healthcare. “I hope we can figure out additional ways to partner with community-based organizations to help combat social determinants of health and continue bringing care to underserved populations,” she says. — Amy Roach
