Design Trends: Prepare to be Floored

What's the latest trend in flooring? We've got you covered.

Amy Blair recently gave us the scoop on what your floors should be wearing this year. The expert at Floor Coverings International in Naples says the light beachy tones reminiscent of driftwood remain a popular option for buyers. Because natural oil-rubbed wood floors are designed to patina, each step or dance move you make is only going to beautify the wood. Be wary of floors covered with acrylic or polyurethane, as they can degrade. The trend toward more natural materials is also leading buyers to wool carpeting. “Wool is as natural as it gets—straight from the sheep,” she says. “It is not your grandmother’s itchy wool. It’s soft and luxurious.” Wool is also naturally flame-retardant and doesn’t require chemically added stain resisters, so it’s a safer, green option.
