Busy, Stressed, Unhappy? Diagnosis: Time Famine

Timesaving purchases might just make you a bit happier.

Sometimes, it feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything completed. That may make you feel stressed or panicked or even depressed. If that’s the case, you may be suffering from time famine.

According to a study released by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, spending money on a timesaving purchase is linked to greater life satisfaction.

Yes, it’s perfectly fine to seek help in order to gain some time.

For example, your grocery shopping can be done for you. Instacart, a popular grocery delivery service, charges a total of $6 to have your groceries delivered to you within two hours. Of course, there’s probably a neighborhood teenager looking for a few bucks who can mow your yard. And don’t forget about cleaning services, either. Spending $100 to clean the house may be a worthwhile investment to free up some time.

Elizabeth Dunn, co-author of the study and professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia, says:

“Sometimes when people imagine timesaving services maybe what they’re picturing is a housekeeper, butler and a gardener, but what we’re talking about is just spending $40 makes a difference.”

Do it all in the name of timesaving, and don’t ignore your diagnosis if you want to feel relieved.
