Feel Good

Each of Our Cells Has Its Own Clock

Not literally, of course. But Nobel Prize-winning research is showing how lack of sleep affects health.

Our body knows, down to the molecular level, when our sleep schedule is off.

The work of Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael W. Young won a Nobel Prize on Monday. They’ve recently shown how each of our cells operates based around a routine. If that routine gets thrown off, our body may suffer. For example, a late night snack can throw off the pancreas, which starts producing insulin at an irregular time.

Getting the munchies at midnight isn’t enough to cause serious health problems, but research is showing that if you act on those munchies enough, it can lead to health issues.
