National Walking Day

Apr 16, 2018
06:00 PM

Blue Zones Project – Southwest Florida is celebrating National Walking Day Monday, April 16 at Florida Gulf Coast University’s Alico Arena. Special guest speaker, Blue Zones Project co-founder, and New York TImes bestselling author Dan Buettner will share lessons from around the world on how to live a longer, healthier, happier life. Following the program attendees can take an optional walk around FGCU’s campus and be treated to plant-based food tastings from Chartwells catering. The event begins promptly at 6 p.m. with doors opening at 5 p.m. at Alico Arena (12181 FGCU Lake Pkwy E, Fort Myers, FL 33913) To RSVP, visitwellbeingSWFL.eventbrite.com.

Attendees at Alico Arena will receive a Blue Zones Project t-shirt, be entered to win prize drawings for copies of Dan’s book, and will also be eligible to win prizes to Blue Zones Project Approved™ restaurants.

National Walking Day, an annual observance sponsored by the American Heart Association (AHA), is designed to get people moving, no matter their location. According to the AHA, Americans are spending more time sitting in front of a screen and are becoming less active, which can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other diseases.

To combat these health issues, Blue Zones Project, a community-led well-being improvement initiative, is partnering with Florida Gulf Coast University, area schools, and organizations in Naples, Bonita Springs, and Estero to encourage community members to walk for at least 30 minutes on April 16.

Brought to Southwest Florida by NCH Healthcare System, in collaboration with Sharecare, Inc. and Blue Zones, LLC, Blue Zones Project is a vital part of Southwest Florida’s well-being improvement initiative that encourages changes in the community that lead to healthier options.
